Only very few tourists, who come to Krkonoše, don´t want to look round from the highest Czech mountain. Going with the chairlift is the easiest way how to reach its peak. The chairlift has celebrated its 55th birthday in 2004. It is the oldest chairlift of its kind in the whole Europe. As it is a real technical and tourist rarity, we would like to introduce it to you on this page a little closer.

The first section from Pec to Růžová hora was opened on 15 January 1949, the second section Růžová hora - Sněžka on 10 November 1949. The chairlift transfers people and their baggage and is also used to supply the chalets on Růžová hora and Sněžka with provisions. The length of the first section is 1560m (5123 ft) with 464 m (1523 ft) altitude difference, the second section is 1967 m (6459 ft) long with 240 m (788 ft) altitude difference. There are 105 two-seat chairs, these are roofed in the first section, but not in the second, because of the occasional strong winds. The transfer capacity in both sections are 250 people per hour. During its lifetime, a total of more than 10 million people has been brought to Růžová hora and more than 6 million all the way to Sněžka.

When there is no strong wind, the chairlift is open daily from 8am - 19pm, the return ticket to Sněžka costs 300,- Kč, children under 10 and disabled pay 160,- Kč.
